How to Get Started with SpanishDict Classrooms

Setting up a class in SpanishDict Classrooms

To access the Classrooms feature, go to https://www.spanishdict.com/, click the three dots in the menu bar at the top of the page, and then select "Classrooms" from the dropdown menu. You can also type spanishdict.com/classrooms in your web browser's address bar to go straight to the Classrooms feature.

Once you navigate to the Classrooms page, click the "Get Started" button.

You'll then be prompted to sign up for a free SpanishDict account (or log into an existing one). Follow the steps to sign up, and then choose your role (e.g., Teacher).

Select the learning management system that you use at your school.

We currently only offer support for Google Classroom and will be releasing a SpanishDict class management platform soon. Blackboard and Canvas support may be considered in the future.

If you do not use Google Classroom in your school, you can still use the free resources on SpanishDict with your students, such as our vocabulary and conjugation quizzes and pronunciation videos.

If you selected Google Classroom, you'll then be asked to link your Google Classroom account. Click the "Link Google Classroom Account" button and then follow the prompts in the Google pop-up window to link your account.

If you don't have any classes in your Google Classroom account, you'll be asked to set them up before you can start creating assignments on SpanishDict.

If you already have classes set up in your Google Classroom account, you'll be asked to select the classes that you want to sync.

You'll then see a dashboard with all of your synced classes. From the dashboard, you can add a class or create assignments. Clicking on the three dots to the right of a class will reveal a "Remove class" button.

To create an assignment, click the "Create assignment" button to the right of a class name. Then select the assignment type (vocabulary or grammar).

Assigning a vocabulary quiz

After clicking "Vocabulary", you can select a list(s) from either your own collection or those made by SpanishDict. If you want to assign personalized lists to your students but have not yet created your own lists, you will see a "Create New List" button that you can click to get started.

If you click "Create New List", you'll be taken to the vocabulary list creation page. The list will be given a randomized title, which you can click to edit. Once you finish adding words and translations to the list, you can click the "Create Assignment" button to finish the process.

You will need to select the quiz format (open input or multiple choice) for the assignment. If you select multiple lists to assign at the same time, they will all utilize the same quiz format. If you would like to assign multiple lists with different quiz formats, you will need to assign them individually.

You'll then need to set a start date and due date for the assignment(s) with start and end times. You can click the date boxes to open a calendar to select the dates and click into the time boxes to type in the exact times you want to use. The hour and date selection is based on the time zone you're in when creating the assignment.

Select the class(es) for the assignment and click the "Create X Assignment" button at the bottom of the page to save the assignment.

The assignment will then be saved in your Google Classroom account under the Classwork tab. Assignments that have not yet been released will be grayed out until they are sent out to students.

Assigning grammar lessons

After clicking "Grammar" on the "Create an Assignment" page, you will see a list of the grammar skills (topics) for which we offer video-based lessons. (New skills are being added often!)

You can either check the box next to a skill to assign all of the lessons contained within that skill at one time, or you can click on the arrow to the left of a skill title to expand the box and view all of the individual lessons.

You can then check the lessons that you want to assign together. Once you're finished, click "Continue" at the bottom of the page.

You'll then be able to adjust the start and end dates and times. When you're ready, click the "Create X Assignments" button at the bottom of the page.

The assignments will then appear in the "Classwork" tab of your Google Classroom account.

Student process

Once an assignment is released on its start date, students can click on the link in Google Classroom to go to the vocabulary quiz or grammar lesson.

Two Google windows will pop up, where they will need to select the Google account that they are linking and accept SpanishDict's request to connect to their Google account.

They will then see the assignment.

Once they finish an assignment, they can click "Vocabulary" or "Grammar" at the top of the page to see their respective lesson progress.
